Cartoneria is a traditional papier mâché process, sometimes called carton piedra (rock cardboard). This process was introduced into Mexico around the 17th century as a way to make religious objects for churches and was then refined in Central Mexico. While today the process is still used in the making of religious items, it has been expanded upon by contemporary artisans like Regina to make a wide variety of items for festival and decorative use.
