Chiapas

Emma Camila is a fusion of the names Emmanuel and Camila, our children. We created EmmaCamila in 2015 when Cami was 2 years old, and Emmanuel had not been born yet. However, it was always in our minds that when he was born, he would be called that so that he would be present, as the main basis of what we are…

For us, the main foundation is family. Now, “Emma Camila Crafts” has been forming a network of people who are part of a universal family… Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life!!!

Chiapaneca Laja boasts a long history, with roots dating back to pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica. Back then, artisans used the resin of the aje tree (also known as llaveria-axin) mixed with chia oil and pigments to create a protective and decorative coating for gourds used in ceremonies.

Today skilled artisans like the Jimenez couple, continue to craft beautiful objects using the same basic technique. They apply layers of laja, derived from the aje larvae or European linseed oil, onto various forms like gourds (“toles” and “pumpos“), crosses (wall, pedestal, and “copoya“), and furniture pieces, all showcasing the unique artistic heritage of Chiapas.
