José Adolfo Escudero

Olinalá, Guerrero

José creates carved boxes from the linaloe tree that grows in Guerrero, Mexico. The tree is oily with a rich aroma, and veined or marbled in texture. These items are then varnished with a dolomite lacquer, a stone that is abundant in Guerrero. The stronger the aroma and the shinier the lacquer, the higher the final price of the item created through this process.

José and his family create boxes for many different uses, such as tea and cigars. They also produce trays, mini gourds, and sewing boxes.
