For generations, Jacobo Mendoza and his family have been creating traditional woven rugs in Teotitlán del Valle, a town just 20 minutes outside the city of Oaxaca. His son began weaving at the age of five on a small loom and is now studying law while working on fine weaving techniques. His daughter is also a student and produces beautiful textile pieces. Jacobo’s wife is known for crafting exceptional and detailed designs as well.
Their pieces draw inspiration from both ancient pre-Hispanic architecture and contemporary design. Jacobo’s dedication to preserving traditional weaving methods using natural dyes—such as cochineal, indigo, walnut, and pericón—has earned him national recognition. He won third place in the 2nd National Textile Competition in 2014 and first place in both the 3rd and 4th editions.
Each year, Jacobo visits San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, where he exhibits his work at Casa de la Cuesta.
