Bertha Vega Cruz

San Ignacio Arareko, Chihuahua

Bertha Vega Cruz is a talented Rarámuri artisan from San Ignacio de Arareko, deep in the Sierra Tarahumara of Chihuahua, Mexico. From an early age, Bertha learned traditional embroidery and sewing techniques passed down through generations, skills she has refined over more than a decade dedicated to regional craftsmanship. Her love for her culture and passion for innovation led her to create her own clothing brand: Bikiyá Sopory (“Three Stars”).

Bikiyá Sopory was born as a tribute to her family, especially her two children, and the opportunities she pursued for them beyond the Sierra. Through her brand, Bertha fuses ancestral Rarámuri embroidery techniques, marked by intricate pleating, delicate bias finishes on sleeves and collars, and colorful symbolic patterns, with contemporary fashion trends. Each garment she designs tells a story of resilience, identity, and the enduring beauty of her people.

Recognized for her mastery and creativity, Bertha collaborated with national figures such as Chef Mónica Lazcano, crafting a traditional outfit showcased at the International Cacao and Coffee Gastronomic Festival in Mexico City in 2019. That same year, she presented her first full clothing collection at the Centro Cultural de las Fronteras, featuring designs for men, women, and children, all inspired by Rarámuri symbolism.

Bertha Vega Cruz’s work not only preserves ancestral techniques but also paves new paths for indigenous art in the fashion world. Each of her pieces reflects a deep respect for tradition and a contemporary artistic vision, positioning her as one of Chihuahua’s leading artisan designers and a proud representative of Rarámuri cultural heritage.
